Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT -B)

Prerequisites

  • 18 Years of age prior to the Practical Exam (4-25-09)

Course Requirements

  • The student must obtain Healthcare Provider Level CPR Certification by the second week of the course.
  • The student must begin or have completed all required immunizations prior to beginning any clinical or field observation rotations.
  • The student must complete both terms in succession.
  • The student must be able to read and comprehend at a 12th grade level. This will be verified by academic record or college assessment exam.
  • Students must submit all required documentation to the Course Director to continue in the course.

Course Summary

The EMT-Basic course is taught based on the Department of Homeland Security, US Department of Transportation, and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration National Standard Curriculum. This course requires cognitive and psychomotor skills mastery for successful completion.

Course content includes basic knowledge and proper management of Patient Assessment, Airway Management, Medical Emergencies, Traumatic Emergencies, Pediatric Emergencies, Geriatric Emergencies, Environmental Emergencies, EMS Systems and Communications, and Documentation.

Length of Course

  • 140-150 classroom hours; includes didactic and practical lab;
  • 8 hours clinical experience in a hospital emergency room;
  • Ambulance observation time may be required;
  • The course is offered over two terms for a total of 10 credits (5 credits per term). 

Certification Examinations

The EMT-B certification exams are conducted by the sponsoring Community College under the direction of the State/NREMT. A cognitive exam is conducted by Pearson Vue Testing through contract with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). The practical exam is given under the supervision of a Certifying Officer provided by the State/MREMT. The practical exam consists of the following skills stations;

  1. Patient Assessment Management - Trauma
  2. Patient Assessment Management – Medical
  3. Cardiac Arrest Management
  4. Bag-Valve-Mask Ventilation of the Apneic Patient  including Combi-tube
  5. Spinal Immobilization Station (Seated or Supine) 
  6. Random Basic Skills (random administration of one of 8 skills)
