Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate (EMT - I)

Prerequisites

  • Completion of placement testing for writing skills at WR049 or higher, reading at RD090 or higher, and math at MTH020 or higher
  • Must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age at time of the first class session.
  • Must be certified as an Oregon EMT-Basic
  • Must currently be certified in CPR for BLS Health Care Providers as issued in accordance with current national standard curriculum.

Course Requirements

  • Each student on the first night of class must have a letter of recommendation to take the EMT-Intermediate course from the current EMS Supervising Physician
  • Proof of required immunizations will be required prior to beginning any field or clinical rotations.

Course Summary

The EMT-Intermediate course is based on the Oregon Specific Curriculum and does not lead to certification at the National level. This course is based on the 1985 National Standard Curriculum established by NHTSA DOT.

Students taking this course will be taught to recognize and treat a variety of conditions encountered by the EMT-Intermediate. The course covers the roles and responsibilities, medical and trauma patient assessment and management, emergency pharmacology, venous access and medication administration, airway-management and ventilation, electrocardiogram (EKG) monitoring and management of dysrhythmias, special considerations such as, pediatrics, geriatrics and environmental emergencies. This course emphasizes critical thinking in the acute care environment.

Length of Course

  • 140-150 classroom hours; includes didactic and practical lab;
  • 8 hours clinical experience in a hospital emergency room with 20 patient contacts;
  • Ambulance observation/field internship required;
  • The course is offered over two terms for a total of 10 credits (5 credits per term).

Certification Examinations

The EMT-Intermediate certification exams are conducted by the sponsoring Community College under the direction of the State. A cognitive exam is conducted by the College in accordance with the requirements established by the Oregon EMT-Intermediate curriculum. The practical exam is given under the supervision of a Certifying Officer provided by the State. The practical exam consists of the following skills stations;

  1. Patient Assessment/Management - Trauma
  2. Ventilatory Management
  3. Cardiac Arrest Management
  4. IV Therapy/Bolus Medications
