Medical Laboratory Technician Program Criteria

The selection process is done solely through (with) WVC and Interpath Laboratory representatives.

Selection to the fourth quarter of the program occurs quarterly, when files are complete and all courses in the first three quarters of the program have been completed. The last opportunity for this to occur each year is during spring quarter. The number of positions available in the fourth quarter is dependent upon the number of clinical training sites available. Selection of applicants, when the program is over-enrolled, we be largely based on the applicant's Probability of Success Score (PSS), which is based on the following:

  • Cumulative GPA
  • GPA in core science courses (BIOL 221, 222, 223, CHEM 110 and CHEM 111 or equivalent courses)
  • Repeating any of the core sciences, or their equivalents, for any reason will reduce the applicant's PSS.
  • Applicants with the highest PSS will be accepted first.

All applicants must have submitted a complete application file, and must have completed all of the courses listed above. Applicants who have not completed the prerequisite courses must document that they are enrolled and will complete them by the end of the spring quarter. A successful interview is also required as part of the admission process for all MLT applicants outside of Wenatchee/Okanogan and Moses Lake areas.

A Letter of Intent to join the MLT program and a Program Check List must be submitted to the admissions and registration office, accompanied by the required documentation, no later than the first week of spring quarter each year. Students will receive these two documents along with their syllabus when they enroll in MLT 102. These two documents cannot be submitted until all courses in the first three quarters of the program are completed, or the student is enrolled in the last few.

Once accepted into the medical laboratory technology program, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Pay the $25.00 acceptance fee by the deadline designated in the acceptance letter.
  • Submit to a criminal history check before beginning any clinical work experience. Conviction of certain crimes may prevent completion of the clinical course requirements of the program and may prevent future licensure and employment in the health field.
  • Read and sign the Child and Adult Abuse Information Act and have your signature witnessed by a non-family member.
  • Purchase accident insurance for participation in clinical learning experiences. This insurance may be purchased by quarter or by academic year through the college or a private carrier.
  • Purchase liability insurance through the college for participation in clinical learning experiences.
  • Provide documentation of current immunizations: MMR (Measles/Mumps/Rubella), Tetanus/Diphtheria, Hepatitis B series, Tuberculin Skin Test (PPD) and a statement of your current health status.
  • Acquire and maintain a current Healthcare Provider CPR card (adult, child, infant). This is required from entry into the program until graduation. Clinical facilities require annual re-certification.
  • A negative drug test is required for the medical laboratory technician program. Students that fail the drug test will not be able to complete the program.
