Is Distance Education For You?
What is distance learning?
Distance learning can be described as any course offered by non-traditional delivery methods. This includes Video, Interactive Television, Online, Hybrid, and Guided Instruction courses.
Can I be successful taking distance learning courses?
The distance learning student should be an independent, motivated, and flexible individual. Use our assessment to see if these classes would be a fit for you.
What computer skills do I need to take distance learning courses ?
Online students are required to have an Internet e-mail account and to be able to use a web browser. We strongly recommend that you have your own computer rather than relying on computers at office/public sites that are not available to you on weekends or evenings. Your particular course may also have additional requirements such as specific software that runs on your computer, which may or may not entail additional hardware needs.
Distance education courses are delivered to you in a variety of methods. Try our computer skills assessment to determine which courses might suit you best.
Types of Distance Education Classes
Online Classes
Online classes take place via the internet, using www.bmcconline.org, an online course managment system. Bmcconline classes allow instructors to place course content in a password-protected site that only students who are registered for the class can access. Students can access these courses from any computer that has a connection to the internet at any time day or night. As with a campus class, you will have assignment due dates and if your class has online exams, exams may have due dates as well. Students and Instructors will typically interact with each other via e-mail and bulletin board discussions.
Hybrid Classes
Hybrid classes combine line lecture classes with online components. Students meet with instructors in the classroom for some scheduled meeting times. Up to 75% of the class time may occur online. Students and instructors interact in the classroom, as well as online via bmcconline classrooms. It is important to check the course syllabus to see how classroom time and linline assignments are blended together.
Electronic Reserves/Web-based instruction
An online component class is defined as a class that uses an instructor website or Electronic Reserves as a content delivery modality. These courses could require DVD/CD/Video's to supplement this mode of delivery.
Video/Telecourse
Telecourses combine video taped lessons, study guides, textbook readings, written assignments, and traditional on campus testing. Contact with the instructor may include telephone calls, e-mail, mail, and personal conferences on campus.
Interactive Television (ITV)
ITV courses generally use cameras at both the broadcasting and receiving site classrooms as well as two-way audio. ITV technology is available at the Pendleton, Baker, Hermiston, Milton Freewater, locations with more to come!
Elluminate Live
Elluminate Live is web-based technology that adds live elearning to synchronous and asynchrounous distance education programs, with opportunities for real-time discussion and dynamic interaction over the internet.
