Working and Learning

Blue Mountain Community College utilizes the talents of its students through part-time Student Employment. At the same time, student employees gain valuable work experience and have the opportunity to work within their field of study. 

 

In addition to Federal Work Study (FWS), BMCC also offers campus-funded student employment. The Financial Aid Office is responsible for administering both FWS and campus-based student employment funds (including general and department funds).

Federal Work-Study Program

FWS is a need-based program available summer, fall, winter, and spring terms each award year to students who need the earnings to meet their educational expenses. In order to be eligible, students must:

  • Submit a FAFSA each year;
  • Complete the BMCC financial aid verification (if selected for verification by the federal Department of Education) process and be awarded;
  • Have unmet need equivalent to the amount of work-study offered;
  • Maintain satisfactory Academic Progress at the time of award and each term;
  • Be enrolled 6 eligible credits each eligible term.

How to apply for a job (both FWS and campus-funded)

  1. View the positions listed below and identify those of interest to you. You can contact the department for a full job description.
  2. Complete the Student Employment Application and send it the supervisor listed on the position. Please remember that applying for a job does NOT guarantee you will be granted an interview or be hired.
  3. The supervisor will screen the applicants and contact you to schedule an interview if your qualifications and/or experience match the job requirements.
  4. The supervisor will then guide you through next steps.

Student Employment Handbook 

Documents to complete after the interview:

The documents below should only be started after you have met with the supervisor and it is agreed to do the “After Interview” steps.

After the interview, please complete the following steps:

  1. Student Employment Agreement;
  2. Student Employment Direct Deposit;
  3. 2023 Federal W-4;
  4. 2023 Oregon W-4;
  5. Complete the I-9 and provide your supervisor with acceptable identification (see the I9 form for details);
  6. Your supervisor will submit all the above ORIGINAL paperwork to the Financial Aid Office and wait for notification of a start date. DO NOT START WORK before receiving notification from the Financial Aid Office;
  7. The Financial Aid Office will notify you and your supervisor once you are clear to begin employment;
  8. Your Supervisor will then arrange a start date and instruct you on the payroll system.

Returning students (worked within the previous 12 months):

  1. Complete the Student Employment Agreement-Returning Student;
  2. Your supervisor will submit all the above ORIGINAL paperwork to the Financial Aid Office and wait for notification of a start date. DO NOT START WORK before receiving notification from the Financial Aid Office;
  3. The Financial Aid Office will notify you and your supervisor once you are clear to begin employment;
  4. Your Supervisor will then arrange a start date and instruct you on the payroll system.

Art Gallery Assistant

Job Description: Assistants open and close the Gallery. Provide high quality customer service. Greet gallery visitors including students, staff, faculty, and community members. Answer questions about the artist and artwork. Ensure safety of the artwork. Receive payments for sales of artwork. Assist with preparing the gallery for shows, including spackling, sanding, painting and hanging artwork. Perform light cleaning duties including vacuuming. Assist with distribution of flyers. Assist at opening receptions. Assist with tours and field trips. Additional gallery, office, and art related tasks as needed.

Skills needed: Enjoy working with people. Ability to speak to visitors & groups about the Gallery and artwork.

Schedule:  Regular Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 9:30am-1:30pm during shows. Additional evening hours will be required occasionally for special events, including the Opening Receptions and CCT (theater) productions.

Art Lab Assistant

Job Description:  Assist with studio reorganization and maintenance; including but not limited to: inventory of art supplies and props, storage organization, maintenance of studio art equipment. Help with keeping studio tools clean and in good working order. Assist with preparation of critique area (may include sanding, sparkling and touch-up painting). Update art display cases; may prepare demo materials,  install example artworks. May be asked to assist with special events. Be an ambassador for the art program.

Skills needed: Experience with, or an interest in, any of the following: drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture (woodworking, metals). Ability to lift 25 lbs. Enjoy artwork and be interested in learning more about materials. Ability to take direction and work independently.
