SALEM, OR – Blue Mountain Community College (BMCC) made a strong impression at the Oregon Community College Association’s 2025 Legislative Summit on March 5th and 6th, where students and college leaders spent two days immersed in advocacy, networking, and legislative engagement at the state Capitol.
Representing BMCC were three outstanding students—Alina Buts (Publicity and Marketing Coordinator, BMCC Associated Student Government), Makayla Collins (Activities Coordinator, BMCC Associated Student Government), and Grant Hills (BMCC Student Ambassador)—alongside Garrett Mickalson (Director of Recruitment and Retention), Jordan Monaco (Director of College Relations), and Dr. Mark Browning (BMCC President).
The first day of the summit focused on advocacy training, providing attendees with the tools to effectively communicate the value of Oregon’s community colleges to policymakers. Through workshops and discussions, students gained firsthand insight into how legislative decisions impact higher education and student success.
On day two, BMCC’s delegation headed to the Capitol to meet with Representative Greg Smith, Representative Bobby Levy, and Senator Todd Nash, discussing the critical role of community colleges in workforce development, economic growth, and student opportunities. The group also observed the House Floor Session, and BMCC student ambassador Grant Hills was personally invited to sit on the Senate Floor alongside Senator Nash—a rare and prestigious opportunity for a student advocate.
“This experience was truly eye-opening,” said Grant Hills. “Being able to sit on the Senate Floor and see firsthand how decisions are made was incredible. It reinforced how important it is for students to be involved and have a voice in the process.”
BMCC extends its deepest gratitude to Representatives Smith and Levy, Senator Nash, and the Oregon Community College Association for the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about the future of community colleges in Oregon. As BMCC continues to champion student success and accessibility in higher education, advocacy efforts like these remain a top priority.
